DJ Spinbad – 90s Megamix

Tuesday, April 28th, 2009
dj-spinbad-90s-megamix

Its really hard to write stuff like “this is the ultimate 90s mega mix” or the “only 90s mix you need” without sounding like some terrible infomercial for some cheesy product that comes on at 4 in the morning on some TV shopping channel.

For those who know Dj Spinbad’s legendary mixtapes like “Rock the Casbah (The 80s megamix)” and “Needle to the Groove”, my guess is that you’re probably not even reading this anymore and have already clicked the download link and trying to contain your excitement as you watch that status bar grow.

I don’t really know what else to say about this mix other than its just straight sick… “Rock the Casbah” influenced my shit so much, and this one here just reminds me of how creative you can get with a bunch of records, two turntables and a sense of humour. Please just download it and listen to it.

Dj Spinbad -90s megamix

BIg shout to Dj Whatever for letting me know about this one!

FUNK MUNDIAL REMIX CONTEST REVIEW

Tuesday, April 28th, 2009
funk-mundial-remix-contest-review

The deadline for submissions in the Crookers / Funk Mundial remix contest ended last night. Spreading out in the blogosphere like a wildfire the remix contest was featured on many blogs and websites, even XLR8R magazine featured it in its online version. Thus, the results are truly mundial. We received a reggaeton remix from Puerto Rico, a banging Tecno Brega mix from São Paulo and tons of ravey stuff from all over the planet, even from heavy weights like Brabe from Holland or Sticky K courtesy of Dubsided fame.

We are currently in the process of remix evalution – with more than sixty entries, a real challenging job. Until we´ll announce the winners of the contest this Friday, we´ll give you something to play with : The Funk Mundial cube. Download the construction sheet for your own cube here:

http://exiltiroler.net/download/manrecordings/funkmundial-cube.pdf

Special thanks to Analog / Michael Ostermann from Vienna, Austria for designing the cube.

And of course: We´d like to say many thanks to all producers that provided their versions and participated in the contest.

AGGRO BERLIN R.I.P.

aggro-berlin-r-i-p

German rap label Aggro Berlin filed for bankruptcy last week. After years of representing the rough, rugged and raw of Berlin´s streets, Germanys notorious battle ship of rap is sinking, putting the final nail into the coffin what was once called “Deutscher Rap”. Founded in 2001 as an independent label, Aggro soon became a major force in the German rap game, with artists like Sido (wearing a MF Doom inspired mask) and Fler causing major debates in German media with their explicit sexist and violent raps. Mocking U.S. west coast rap culture in looks and attitude and mixing it with German street talk, Aggro became mythologised as the German equivalent to Death Row Records – minus the killings. The commercial success of Aggro was huge in the label´s lifetime, but artistically the label never could reach beyond its role as a platform for institutionalised provocation. I always thought the music of Aggro wasnt very special, yet some of the beats they released had a special kind of dopeness. And some of the rhymes by Aggro artists were so absurd, they were worth a good laugh. They will be missed.

For their last compilation, “Aggro Ansage 8″ (”Aggro Shout Out Nr.8″), Aggro requested permission to license the instrumental of Seiji´s “Tudo Mundo”, which we released on Funk Mundial #4. The deal didnt worked out. So as a musical obituary we give you today the unreleased Aggro / Man Recordings collab:

MAN RECORDINGS INSPIRATION SERIES #15 : MANTRONIX

Besides “Planet Rock”, “Bassline” by Mantronix is probably the 2nd most important song in the genealogy of the Man Recordings sound. “Bassline” includes, in it´s minimalist essence, the three elements our label is all about: Bass, Beats and Raps. In music history, “Bassline” is one of the first tracks to use a Roland 303 as bassline generator (though the video above shows a TR-909) and is not only considered a mile stone in new school rap, being released in the same year like Run DMC´s “King Of Rock” and LL Cool J´s “Radio”, but also one of the main tracks to sow the seeds out of which Detroit Techno grew.

Man Recordings Tape

No, I’m not talking about that old school rectangular object that you used to listen to in your dad’s car. I’m talking about the sticky kind. Big shout out to the Haaksinator for coming up with that… it’s probably the most useful piece of merchandising that I have ever seen.

The photo above demonstrates just one of the many ways that this tape can be put to use. The hairy leg in the photo belongs to Motorpitch, who can only do music in the summer while wearing his trusty Birkenstocks. To show his gratitude to the Man Rec Tape for mending his sandal, here is one very nice summertime mashup he asked me to put up to share on the blog.

GHOST TOWN CUMBIA

When recently posting the video of “Ghost Town” by The Specials in the “Man Recordings Inspiration Series”, I received various emails from across the globe from people saying that this song was highly influential for them too. On my trip to Buenos Aires with Deize, I met Fantasma, a musician who is appropriating songs from European pop and making the finest digital cumbia out of it. One of the songs he gave me was his cumbia version of “Ghost Town”.

Download it from here:
Fantasma – Ghost Town

Only two weeks after my posting I found out that NY T-Shirt chief rockers Supreme made a T-Shirt with lines out of “Ghost Town” (see above). Seems there´s something in the air about The Specials….

It´s Eastern and while kids across Germany search for hidden eggs in gardens and public parks, we´ll give away our Easter goods on the Man Recorder – and you dont even have to search.
Today we give you the fabulous “Dança Da Heidi” by DJ Amazing Clay feat. Joyce Muniz and MC Gringo. It´s their take on the story of the Alpian girl from the 19th century, which became world famous in the 1970s with a Japanese anime series.

Warming up for the 2010 Chopin year, our friend Artur 8 from Warsaw´s Astigmatic festival initiated the compilation “Inspired by Chopin”. The CD, only released in Poland so far, features Chopin interpretations by Disco dons such as Morgan Geist, Daniel Wang, The Glimmers, Munk or Krazy Baldhead as well as a fabulous baile funk remix by DJ Amazing Clay. If you´re in Poland sometime soon, make sure to grab a copy of “Astigmatic Inspired by Chopin”. Polska´s #1 composer never sounded more fresh.

Funnily, on my last visit in Rio, I found a statue of Frederic Chopin right under the sugar loaf mountain.

Cultura Copia

Thursday, April 2nd, 2009
cultura-copia

Slightly unsure of the exact legality of this mix, it was commercially available as a CD at turntable.com when it came out in 2004/2005, but the pure logistics of legally clearing the tracks seems pretty impossible to me.

This was referred to as “the third world brainfreeze” when it was released. DJ Nuts is a renowned and well-respected Brazilian turntablist with some hip hop production credits with the usual suspects, but here he has really outdone himself with a lightning, deftly mixed 54 tracks in 77 minutes, no mean feat with funk and soul. And this is no ordinary funk and soul mix, all the tracks are pretty rare seventies Brazilian rare groove that only the most knowledgeable or well-connected plunderer with an insiders knowledge of São Paulo’s second hand record stores (sebos) could unearth.

As you can imagine the mix is full of deep funky samba grooves, nevertheless, throughout the mix familiar melodies spring out -Wilson Das Neves “Na Na Hey Hey Kiss Him Goodbye” brings on puffy skirted 80’s flashbacks, Antonio Carlos & Jocafi’s “Kabaluere” has been sampled by both DJ Nu-mark and Marcelo D2 and I’m sure I even heard a funky R&B version of the batman theme.

A fascinating document if only to hear the Brazilian perspective on an area that is constantly being cited for its influence but has rarely been explored or exploited with such expertise and zest. So ignore that crappy cover, read the tracklist and weep (…and then download).

NEW FEADZ FUNK MUNDIAL 7″ OUT NOW!

Wednesday, April 1st, 2009
new-feadz-funk-mundial-7-out-now

Our favourite Ed Banger, Feadz, has provided #9 in the Funk Mundial series. Fusing a major melody from old Europe, i.e. Mozart, with the banging beats from Rio De Janeiro, Feadz has quite probably created the most radio friendly Funk Mundial track to date. Sinden, Annie Mac, Shir Khan and DJ Beware already dropped it in their radio shows and on Austria´s FM4 station Feadz tune is played in daytime radio.

Here´s the original Montagem from Rio on which Feadz´track is based. Hurry up with copping the 7″ – it´s limited to 500 copies. It´s also available thru the Man Rec web shop.
