Its really hard to write stuff like “this is the ultimate 90s mega mix” or the “only 90s mix you need” without sounding like some terrible infomercial for some cheesy product that comes on at 4 in the morning on some TV shopping channel.
For those who know Dj Spinbad’s legendary mixtapes like “Rock the Casbah (The 80s megamix)” and “Needle to the Groove”, my guess is that you’re probably not even reading this anymore and have already clicked the download link and trying to contain your excitement as you watch that status bar grow.
I don’t really know what else to say about this mix other than its just straight sick… “Rock the Casbah” influenced my shit so much, and this one here just reminds me of how creative you can get with a bunch of records, two turntables and a sense of humour. Please just download it and listen to it.
The deadline for submissions in the Crookers / Funk Mundial remix contest ended last night. Spreading out in the blogosphere like a wildfire the remix contest was featured on many blogs and websites, even XLR8R magazine featured it in its online version. Thus, the results are truly mundial. We received a reggaeton remix from Puerto Rico, a banging Tecno Brega mix from São Paulo and tons of ravey stuff from all over the planet, even from heavy weights like Brabe from Holland or Sticky K courtesy of Dubsided fame.
We are currently in the process of remix evalution – with more than sixty entries, a real challenging job. Until we´ll announce the winners of the contest this Friday, we´ll give you something to play with : The Funk Mundial cube. Download the construction sheet for your own cube here:
German rap label Aggro Berlin filed for bankruptcy last week. After years of representing the rough, rugged and raw of Berlin´s streets, Germanys notorious battle ship of rap is sinking, putting the final nail into the coffin what was once called “Deutscher Rap”. Founded in 2001 as an independent label, Aggro soon became a major force in the German rap game, with artists like Sido (wearing a MF Doom inspired mask) and Fler causing major debates in German media with their explicit sexist and violent raps. Mocking U.S. west coast rap culture in looks and attitude and mixing it with German street talk, Aggro became mythologised as the German equivalent to Death Row Records – minus the killings. The commercial success of Aggro was huge in the label´s lifetime, but artistically the label never could reach beyond its role as a platform for institutionalised provocation. I always thought the music of Aggro wasnt very special, yet some of the beats they released had a special kind of dopeness. And some of the rhymes by Aggro artists were so absurd, they were worth a good laugh. They will be missed.
For their last compilation, “Aggro Ansage 8″ (”Aggro Shout Out Nr.8″), Aggro requested permission to license the instrumental of Seiji´s “Tudo Mundo”, which we released on Funk Mundial #4. The deal didnt worked out. So as a musical obituary we give you today the unreleased Aggro / Man Recordings collab:
ARTIST: VARIOUS ARTISTS
TITLE: DANIEL HAAKSMAN PRESENTS FUNK MUNDIAL
CAT.NR.: MAN 041
FORMAT: CD + DIGITAL DOWNLOAD
RELEASE: APRL 21st, 2009
Since its inception in November 2006, the Man Recordings vinyl series Funk Mundial has pushed the boundaries of what is called „Brazilian Music“. For the series, Man Recordings boss Daniel Haaksman comissioned some of the world’s hottest producers in electronic dance music to collaborate with various hand picked baile funk Mcs from Rio. Artists like Crookers, Feadz, Jesse Rose, Count+Sinden, Seiji, Scottie B, Riva Starr and Stereotyp created a new mysical hybrid: Funk Mundial, the international interpretation of Rio De Janeiro’s 21st century big booty party music.
The compilation presents for the very first time – a world debut – the global view on the Brazilian music phenomenon called baile funk – in Brazil simply named „funk“. The tracks in the compilation stem from producers from across the globe. Featured are producers from cities such as Paris (Feadz), Milan (Crookers), London (Count+Sinden, Seiji, Riva Starr), Berlin (Jesse Rose, Oliver $, Daniel Haaksman), Vienna (Stereotyp, Makossa Megablast), Chicago (DJ C) and Buenos Aires (El Rémolon, Chancha Via Circuito, Frikstailers). Thus, in their Funk Mundial contributions, they added their particular local club music flavour to their exclusive productions.
You can find a speed garage banger (Count+Sinden’s „Tamborzuda“) that fuses London’s hi speed and heavy bass club sound with a baile funk MC contribution by MC Thiaguinho. The Funk Mundial compilation features the West London broken beat of producer legend Seiji (producer for Bugz In The Attic and Roisin Murphy), teamin up with one of the experienced Mcs in the Rio Baile Funk biz, MC Dolores. There’s the Parisian producer Feadz – the producer of teen idol Uffie, of Edbanger Records fame – who worked for his Funk Mundial track with 8 year old MC Wesley, a child MC from Rio, and added his high-quality beat- and analog synth skills.
Mashing up classical European music with heavy Miami beats. The compilation features the club anthem „Soca Ali Baba“ feat. MC Dandão by Italy´s Crookers, who recently rose to world fame with their remix of Kid Cudi’s „Day+Night“. Another outstanding track is house music’s leading DJ and producer, the Berlin based Jesse Rose and his coop with Deize Tigrona, the queen of baile funk. Plus there’s many more tracks and collaborations by Makossa Megablast, Stereotyp, Oliver $, DJ C and the brain behind this outstanding musical project – Daniel Haaksman.
Get ready for the global remix of Rio Baile Funk: Funk Mundial – 16 amazing fresh tracks, that make any party rumble. Brazilian music never sounded hotter.

TITLE: „Funk Mundial – The Rio Baile Funk Mixes“
CAT NR.: Man 040
FORMAT: Digital
RELEASE DATE: April 21st, 2009
Rio strikes back! With the release “Funk Mundial – Rio Baile Funk Remixes”, Rio De Janeiro’s top baile funk DJs give their musical answers to some of the best tunes of the Funk Mundial series on Man Recordings – presenting baile funk remixes of anthems like Count+Sinden’s “Tamborzuda”, Crookers “Para De Graçinha” or Stereotyp’s “Jeçe Valadão”.
DJ Fú + DJ Dinho, currently highly demanded DJs on the Rio Funk circuit, reworked The Count + Sinden’s “Tamborzuda” in contemporary baile funk fashion. Mixing the ubiquious Tamborzinho – a beatbox line sampled from a live recording of baile funk MC don Mr. Catra – with the track’s original main snyth and MC Thiaguinhos lyrical punchlines, they created a Euro-Brasilian hybrid that is easily matching the original version in floor effectiveness.
DJ Sandrinho, who already contributed to Man Recordings in the Baile Funk Masters series as well as the legendary “Rio Baile Funk Breaks” vinyl, twists Crooker´s “Para De Graçinha” into the Rio booty shape. “Chou Chou!” chants the MC in the opening beats, and surely this track will make girls grind their booties to the ground.
Mashup-boss and Baile Funk Master DJ Egdar put his hands on Stereotyp’s “Jeçe Valadão” feat. Edu K + Joyce Muniz and added Accordion flavour to his Tamborzão based remix. Seiji’s “Tudo Mundo” was remixed by DJ Amazing Clay, the veteran Baile Funk DJ, who’s another contributer to the Baile Funk Masters series and regularly spins the weekend’s with the Curtisom Rio sound system. Last but not least DJ Phabyo, one of the hot new talents in Rio, brings Popozudas into ecstasy.
