Elenco discos

Worth checking out this fan site of the covers of Elenco discos by in-house designer César Vilela. Some beautiful looking covers from what was an excellent label, putting out the best of Bossa Nova at that time. It’s interesting that in an interview talking about the covers he mentions the fact that he had to compete with the multinational releases of that time in the record stores and the simplification of the covers was a way of calling attention to them.

NEW FUNK

Wednesday, September 23rd, 2009
new-funk

What´s up with baile funk these days? In Rio, there´s a culture war going on. The new major is trying to shut down baile funk culture across the city, criminalizing any un-licensed party (err, the majority of them). On the other side, there´s the the Apafunk association (Associação Dos Profissionais E Amigos Do Funk ) who is in the process of establishing funk as an officially valorized and established form of Rio´s urban culture. In between, there´s the music, and here´s a few tracks that recently made the circuit in Rio´s bailes:

DJ Isaac 22 – Montagem Aquecimento Do Pimp
Sandrinho DJ – Hoje Vai Dar Merda feat Mr. Catra
Dennis DJ – No Sofa feat Tati Quebra Barraco
Phabyo DJ – Carimba A Bundinha No Chao feat. Mc Magrao

KID CONGA REMIX CONTEST – THE WINNER

Wednesday, September 16th, 2009
kid-conga-remix-contest-the-winner

My track “Kid Conga” feat. MC Miltinho is getting a lot of love these days. When Fairtilizer approached us to iniate the “Kid Conga Remix Contest” two weeks ago, the love for the track started to increase even more. We counted more than sixty (!) contributions from all around the world when the remix contest submission deadline ended yesterday. I carefully listened to all remixes, and in the end I divided all contributions in four categories picking the two best remixes in each particular style. Standing out were in the categories:

Big room bangers: SobEr, DJ P@app
Minimal: Juke Boyz, Daniel Farley
Ghetto bass: Dirty Monkeez, Kappy
Global beats: Bert On Beats, Tim Turbo

It was hard to decide on the ultimate finalist, but in the end there can only be one winner and it´s…….ramtatata: BERT ON BEATS a.k.a. DJ Critikal

His remix impressed me the most. The “Bert On Beats Remix” is a Kuduro inspired rework which is well mixed and engineered, it has a fantastically programmed half time break-part, plus the beat is bananas and the bassline is just killing it. Congratulations, Bert, err Critikal!

Many thanks to all contributors and to Fairtilizer, you can check out all remixes here.

And here´s the winner remix:

Black Rio 2

black-rio-2

Dj Cliffy from london brazilophile club Batmacumba has put together the collection Black Rio 2 original samba soul 1968-1981, this is a sequel to Black Rio, an excellent compilation on Strut which managed to introduce Brazil’s wealth of samba summery rare grooves to  western punters. This collection promises more of the same, many already familiar from house partys and black bailes if you reside in Brazil, but a nice funky selection all the same. If you are patient, you can still find these tracks on vinyl in Brazillian second hand record stores, if you look outside the big urban centres where the knowledgeable record collectors are, you can pick them up cheaply, although in pretty scruffy covers. Anyway Cliffy seems to know his bananas and courtesy of The Fader has done a half hour promo mix to sample the album.

Edu K`s “Popozuda Rock n´Roll” keeps parties burning across the globe and now it has been sampled by Austrian rapper Skero for a whole new song called “Kabinenparty” (”Cabin´s party”). It features our dear Joyce Muniz MC freestylin´Brasilian stylee where Edu regularly churns out a Slayer inspired guitar solo. If you´re not familiar with German, don´t worry – I also dont understand a single word of what comes out of Skero´s mouth.

My Gostoso Remix EP has arrived yesterday at the Man Rec office on wax and it shines like a small sun when put on a turntable, yay! The vinyl release includes remixes by Edu K, DJ Rob 3, João Brasil, Schlachthof Bronx and Consistent. The digital release has extra remixes by Zombie Disco Squad and Sharkslayer.

Edu K delivers – as a world debut – a Minimal Techno meets Forro interpretation of “Kid Conga”- Imagine Brasil’s Northen power folk meeting up in a Berlin techno club. For the same track Chicago’s ghetto don Rob Threezy brings the big bass drums in his DJ Rob 3 remix, which will bang any Ghetto floor. Rio De Janeiro’s hot new talent João Brasil twists “Kid Conga” into a Tecno Brega track, the sizzling new sound of Brasil’s Amazon area.

VINYL RELEASE DATE: SEPT 4TH 2009
DIGITAL RELEASE DATE: SEPT 11TH 2009

DANIEL HAAKSMAN

Edu K delivers – as a world debut – a Minimal Techno meets Forro interpretation of “Kid Conga”- Imagine Brasil’s Northen power folk meeting up in a Berlin techno club. For the same track Chicago’s ghetto don Rob Threezy brings the big bass drums in his DJ Rob 3 remix, which will bang any Ghetto floor. Rio De Janeiro’s hot new talent João Brasil twists “Kid Conga” into a Tecno Brega track, the sizzling new sound of Brasil’s Amazon area.

Sharkslayer from Helsinki produced a block rocking remix of the anthemic “Pobum Coco”, which already set many dancefloors on fire. Zombie Disco Squad reworked “Senta Senta Mais Uma Vez” in their trademark style – in which the drugged out ecstasy of Berlin’s Panoramabar melts into the frenzy of a Rio baile funk party.

Munich’s Schlachthofbronx, who reworked “Jesus” featuring Tati Quebra Barraco and created a rough and rugged interpretation – call it Bavaria Soca Dancehall.

„Deixa Tocar“ by Berlin’s Consistent (of Frontroom Records fame). Their remix picked the original’s horns and mounted them on an irresistable, French house resembling, dancefloor filler, which already produced hands up in the air wherever played.

Seven remixes with styles that range from Disco House to Tecno Brega to Bmore Beats – the kaleidoscopic sound of Daniel Haaksman gets the appropriate poly-stylistic treatment on „Gostoso Remix“.

Man Recordings Inspiration Series #20: Augustus Pablo

There’s nothing more I like listening to than dub reggae in the summer time, especially now that I’m hearing a lot more dubstep than I used to, its always nice to go back to the O.G. sound. Of all the big names in dub, I think I like Augustus Pablo the most, because I find that he got the best melodies.

My favourite tune from him is “East of the River Nile”. I love the Chinese horn riff, and Augustus is just off the hook on the melodica. In fact, I read that it was Augustus was the one who made the melodica popular in reggae music; the instrument was used primarily for teaching kids about music in Jamaican schools.

Anyways, check the video to see the master at work!

Oh, and here’s an Augustus Pablo tune that I think Santigold sampled for “Shove it”
