Position Normal remixes Schlachthofbronx

PNBBOX2I

A while ago I went to the Position Normal website and ordered the Goodly Time LP (buy it! It’s only five quid and it’s wonderful!). Position Normal’s music is difficult to describe, it is as English as a cup of tea and a buttery crumpet, and uses guitar, samples, loops and extracts that recall Britain of a bygone era. It is a sound that is deliberately lo-fi but at the same time very evocative. It is the predecessor of the sound that has been labelled “Hauntalogical” and that the label Ghost box  has gone on to develop and explore. Listen to the ASDA mix by Moon Wiring Club at TheWire.co.uk, and you can hear the influence.

I started exchanging some e-mails with the aforementioned Mr. Normal, and he showed a curiosity about our own Man Recordings, Daniel sent him some Schlachthofbronx track parts and below is the result. I like this a lot, it’s someone who is worlds away from the Man universe putting their own stamp of eccentricity on what is already a bonkers Bavarian baile pile up. vive la différence!

BABARABATIRI (DJ CRITIKAL BAILE FUNK REMIX)

“Babarabatiri”, originally a 1950s tune by Mambo don Perez Prado, just won´t die. Picked up by Todd Terry in the early 00s and remixed by Masters At Work and other house bigsters, the tune recently returned. Since big horns became the latest craze, a couple of new “Babarabatiri” remixes surfaced, one of my favourite versions is by DJ Critikal from Talinn – our “Kid Conga” remix contest winner, and new signing to Man Recordings. His debut EP is on Man Recordings as Bert On Beats is scheduled for a spring 2010 release. In the meantime, grab his baile funk version here:

CHARQUE SIDE OF THE MOON

Tuesday, December 16th, 2008
charque-side-of-the-moon

Ok, so the first of a series of interesting (non-baile) Brazilian releases that you can download for your xmas/new year’s entertainment. Here we have “Charque Side of the Moon”, which is Floyd’s proto-ambient classic covered by musicians from the city of Belem in the state of Pará in Amazonia.

The “charque” refered to in the title is a type of beef jerky that is eaten but is also an affectionate name for the female genitalia, hence the charming cover.

The project was put together by Luiz Félix, guitarist and vocalist of the band La Pupuña, who basically had the idea to redo the album but with a strong “paraense” influence and the album has contributions from fifteen members of the paraense music scene. Perhaps most interestingly it has the vocal talents of Gaby Amarantos – a technobrega singer from the band Tecnoshow, on “The great gig in the sky”

“Time” also has some nice heavy percusssion from the carimbó group, Os Baioaras, and “Any colour you like” has merengue percussion, for you music anthropologists out there.

The idea of redoing “Dark Side Of The Moon” is not an original one. The has of course been Dub side of the moon” by the Easy All Stars, but here it has a distinct Paraense flava, a sound which starting to come into its own now and is worth investigating further.
