BIG UP 2009!

Monday, December 28th, 2009
big-up-2009

2009 has been a great year for dance music. Fresh tracks and new genres popped up from all four corners of the globe, while mainstream pop music has been the most boring since years (err, could anyone name one serious chart storming tune for 2009?) . As the year is coming to an end, it’s time to do what most bloggers do aka. make the ‘best of the year’ lists. Here’s some of our favourite tunes in 2009. With a lot of hot new stuff in the oven for Man Recordings (Schlachthofbronx EP,  Beware-Motorpitch EP, Edu K EP, Bert On Beats EP, Seiji EP, Isa GT EP produced by Crookers, Daniel Haaksman album, Man Rec 5 Years compilation) 2010 is going to be even bigger! Stay tuned!

Jumbie

WILDLIFE! releases his new EP “JUMBIE” with remixes from a whole bunch of Man Recordings artists such as Schlachthofbronx, Mixhell, Dj Beware & Motorpitch and Edu K. Once more WILDLIFE! highlights the tropic’s darker side of life with this dark, percussion driven smasher to keep caribbean ghosts busy on any given dancefloor.

Our homie WILDLIFE! (AKA the Swiss Johnny Depp) is a generous man, which is why you can get the WILDLIFE – Jumbie (Beware & Motorpitch Remix) for free here.

Be sure to check out the rest of the EP, out now on Beatport

Bobbito in the mix!

Bobbito in the house!

There are certain individuals who just encompass the vibe of their city in everything they do wherever they go, and Bobbito Garcia is definitely one of those souls. When Bobbito came and did a mix  live for my radio show, a couple of weeks back, it was like New York City walked into the studio.

For those who don’t know, Bobbito, together with Stretch Armstrong  ran a hip hop radio show in the early, mid 90’s for on WKCR fm for 8 years in NYC. The show was also syndicated all over the United States as well to other continents. This was definitely THE radio show for hip hop  lovers,

a)they played the best tunes, no commercial pop rap stuff

b) they had the best guests – still unsigned Nas, Jay Z, Biggie, Big Pun, Fugees, Big L  and many more all came on the show for interview and freestyle

c)  with the help of Lord Sear, were responsible for some of the best comedy I have ever heard on any radio show.

Since the end of his radio days, Bobbito has been keeping himself busy as a DJ, writer, streetball player, magazine creator and sneaker consultant. Its been a good few years since he has been on a radio, so it was definitely an honour for me to have him on. We had a good chat, cracked a few jokes, and Bobbito did a wicked latin set.

Find out what Bobbito though his website.  Sneaker fanatics look out for his new Pro Keds basketball shoe coming out end of this month. Music heads look out for Bobbito and Rich Medina’s compilation “Connection- Modern explorations in Afro Beat & Afro Latin”.

Big thanks to Bobbito for letting me blog the mix and interview. Get it here.

Jerk!

Big shout out to Adia for letting me know about this. Another subgenre of hip hop that i can obsess over for a couple of months! Apparently Im late on this , since its actually something that’s been around in LA for a couple of years already. My excuse is that I’m not an African American high school kid living in Urban Los Angeles. If I was though, I would no doubt be wearing lime green skinny jeans with SBs or Chucks and a loud neon tee trying to “jerk”… to be honest I can see kids from South East Asia getting into this; the apparel is favourable plus we like doing group dances. All major labels putting out Jerk records in that part of the world please send me a cheque for this piece of valuable marketing advice.

I’ve heard maybe a dozen Jerk tunes, it sounds to me like a mixture of hyphy and snap music (nice!) Apart from the New Boyz “You’re a Jerk” in the video above, here’s a couple that I really like. Especially that Clothes off Movement tune, the way she says “I can pull a n!!ga h-way better than u can..” SEXY!

Young Rocky – Kicks real active

Clothes Off Movement – Better

Oh, and since Jerk is as much about the dance as it is about the fashion and the music, just go to youtube and type in “jerkin”, you will find amateur dance vids of this style aplenty!

POP POP POP

pop-pop-pop

Why am I so crap at posting stuff on the blog? Why is that I always have to wait till Big Dan Haaksman writes and complains about my lack of posts do I then actually write a post. Why? why? WHY?!?!?

I think it’s because I’m shy to share with the world  my humble opinion.  Plus the fact that at the moment, I don’t do much else than radio, gig, studio and the occasional game of ping pong.

Anyways…

I’ve done a couple of mixtapes for the beautiful and talented MPHO. MPHO is a singer from Brixton, previously best know for her work with the likes of Bugz in the Attic and Coldcut. She is now coming out with her debut album “Pop Art” on Parlophone/Wall of Sound. MPHO’s amazing voice and incredible song writing make the album an irrestible pop album. The first single “Box n Locks” is produced by Switch and has a sample from Echo Beach by “Martha and the Muffins”. They also got Armand Van Helden, Herve and Crazy Cousins to remix the track. My  favourite is still the original though.

new-bootleg

Sorry its been a while… blame it on radio, Spring Festival (too much partying with Roundtable Knights, Motorpitch, Mixhell, Sinden …) , remixes, mixtapes and hay fever…

To make up for it, here’s a brand new bootleg of Michel Cleis “La Mezcla” that Motorpitch and I did. Big shout out to Toy Selectah for lacing me with the original Cumbia samples of the tune!

Hope u enjoy!

FUNK MUNDIAL VIENNA

Monday, May 11th, 2009
funk-mundial-vienna

The prettiest girls of Vienna came down last Saturday to fiercly shake booty at Café Leopold in the Museumsquartier. Special guest Seiji played new remixes and his current UK funky favourites, while Joyce Muniz spanked the crowd hard with some serious Brasilian macho beats, topped with “Bambolero” from Gypsy Kings. DJ Beware shone brightly with seamless mixing everything from early 90s bogle to the latest Afro rave tunes. I dropped tracks from my new EP and was amazed to see people singing along “Subiu, Desceu” by Feadz which has become a radio hit on national radio in Austria. Big Up Vienna, you showed some big love for us again. A pity though the night had to end already at four though the club was still rammed. But we´ll be back soon!!

DJ Spinbad – 90s Megamix

Tuesday, April 28th, 2009
dj-spinbad-90s-megamix

Its really hard to write stuff like “this is the ultimate 90s mega mix” or the “only 90s mix you need” without sounding like some terrible infomercial for some cheesy product that comes on at 4 in the morning on some TV shopping channel.

For those who know Dj Spinbad’s legendary mixtapes like “Rock the Casbah (The 80s megamix)” and “Needle to the Groove”, my guess is that you’re probably not even reading this anymore and have already clicked the download link and trying to contain your excitement as you watch that status bar grow.

I don’t really know what else to say about this mix other than its just straight sick… “Rock the Casbah” influenced my shit so much, and this one here just reminds me of how creative you can get with a bunch of records, two turntables and a sense of humour. Please just download it and listen to it.

No, I’m not talking about that old school rectangular object that you used to listen to in your dad’s car. I’m talking about the sticky kind. Big shout out to the Haaksinator for coming up with that… it’s probably the most useful piece of merchandising that I have ever seen.

The photo above demonstrates just one of the many ways that this tape can be put to use. The hairy leg in the photo belongs to Motorpitch, who can only do music in the summer while wearing his trusty Birkenstocks. To show his gratitude to the Man Rec Tape for mending his sandal, here is one very nice summertime mashup he asked me to put up to share on the blog.

old-school-baile-funk-mix

Haaksman is in Rio….again. He claims its for “label” business, but everytime I skype with him, he’s in a rush because he HAS to go to the beach.

Well, I wish I was in Rio too, and so does Joyce Muniz. Which is why we decided to do a mix of some of the records that we picked up from Rio when we were there last Summer. Most of the tunes in the mix are from vinyl, from the days when they still pressed up Baile Funk onto wax. Some real classics in this mix, from now defunct labels such as Pipos, Balanco, Spacelab and Explocao.

The Six Degrees of Baile Funk

Thursday, February 26th, 2009
the-six-degrees-of-baile-funk

Just got off tour with MPHO as support for Mongrel last weekend. It was two weeks a heck of a lot of fun. During this trip, I managed to break my headphones and get addicted to Roast Chicken flavoured crisps. Everything went pretty smoothly, everyone showed up on time for the gigs, except for one time when Drew, Mongrel’s guitarist, who missed his train from London to Sheffield. Dude turned up ten minutes before the show, calm and composed, just picked up his guitar and do his thing. Respect! I guess being in a band with Pete Doherty means that nothing can faze you, eh? Anyways, Here’s a pic.

Now to why this post is called what it is.

After the Brighton gig, we went and checked out Dj Donaeo play. Man, I love me some UK Garage/Funky. Donaeo smashed it, as well as Nice and Niche, who gave me a mixtape. The tape is sick (you can down download it from their myspace here), and the last track freaked me out. The tune is called “Make it funky for me” by Attaca Pesante ft. Shea. Its a Funky version of the Will.i.am track “Make it funky”, which is his take on Baile Funk. I’m being a music nerd now, but I get excited about stuff like that! You know, just how one type of music influences another… maybe I’ll come up with a UKG inspired Baile Funk track someday.

So attached are the two tunes I was talking about…. I had to take the Attaca Pesante track straight off the mixtape… I couldn’t find it anywhere! If anyone knows where I can buy UKG tunes online please let me know!

Weekend Review and Mongrel Tour

Monday, January 26th, 2009
weekend-review-and-mongrel-tour

Had a great gig in Geneva last Friday at le Zoo club. Me and Joyce Muniz tore it up to a great crowd of Genevans(?) and Brazilians. Big shout out to Rico, Steff and Dj Schnausi for their wonderful hospitality. As per usual, I forgot my camera, and was only able to take one half decent photo with my iphone…

Saturday was the birthday party of my radio station, FM4. I actually almost didnt make it back in time to play there, because of a snow storm in Geneva which delayed all flights coming in and out of the airport. It was proper airport nightmare. Luckily, I did manage to make it back only 3 hours later than scheduled, just back in time to see Deichkind play a wicked set of trashy electro combined with witty lyrics and an amazingly choreographed live show that was complete with illuminated costumes. The crowd went nuts for them. Photo taken from my crappy phone cam, again…

Deichkind live!

This Sunday I’ll be off on UK tour as the support act to UK indie supergroup Mongrel. We will be hitting up many cities in the UK, so please check the dates on their site or mine and come by to the shows if you are in the area! In the meantime, here is a remix that myself and Motorpitch did for their current single.

Mongrel – Hit from the morning sun (Dj Beware and Motorpitch rmx)

I’m off to pack my camera in my bag already, so you can actually see some good photos next time!

Back in Europe

Saturday, January 17th, 2009
back-in-europe

So, Haaksman and I just got back from our gigs in Asia.  It was a fun trip, gigs were great, plus we also managed to squeeze in a few days of holiday in between. In this trip, I also decided to give up smoking… I succeeded for about a week.

Our first stop was Hong Kong for the infamous Pimpin’ Aint Easy night. Pimpin’ Aint Easy is definitely THE night out in Hong Kong for eclectic dance music- a small intimate club with a great crowd who just love to hear all the latest sounds. A big shout out to the hosts of this wonderful night, my good friends Kid Fresh and Dj Enso, for always bringing the good stuff to Hong Kong, as well as keeping the vodka (over)flowing! After the gig, we all went and ate at Chui Wah, my favourite post gig restaurants. I think one of the things that I miss the most about living in Hong Kong is the possibility to get a proper meal at anytime of the day. Hong Kong is just one of those cities that never sleeps and never rests, a place where you can get whatever you want whenever you want.

After spending a few days in Hong Kong buying stuff and visiting family and friends we went on to Taipei, where we were invited to play by local dj legend and all round man of good taste DJ Mykal. Haaksman and I got there a day earlier to check out the city. Taipei is a cool city with a strong Japanese influence and excellent food – big shout out to DJ Noodles for taking us to the amazing food spots! The club where we played, Mint,  was in the world’s tallest building, the Taipeh 101. Party was big fun, and I tried to compete with DJ Mykal and Haaksman in drinking Tequila shots- I was destroyed because I am a crap at drinking.

I LIKE DRUMS

Yes I do. Very much so in fact. All kinds of drums too – from machine gun style marching band percussion to tight ticking Kraftwerk beats.

I started liking drums because of the Chinese Lion Dance. The Lion Dance is a traditional Chinese dance that people would perform for festivities.

When I was a kid, my cousin was a Lion dancer, and sometimes I would get to follow him and the crew to their shows. The combination of the Dance, the boom boom boom of the big drum, the crashing gongs and the shattering cymbals – I was hooked.

So on the subject of drums, here are 2 tracks with some of my favourite sounding drums on record.

The first is “P.S.K.” from Schooly D, which is arguably one of the first gangsta rap records… that loop has been sampled tons of times, from Ruff Ryders to The Prodigy.

Schooly D – P.S.K.
The second tune is from Electronome, which is old school techno from the Netherlands… the name of the tune itself kind of sums it up.

Electronome – Een Drummachine und een Synthesizer
