João Brasil is certainly only one of the most talented yound Brasilian producers of today. With his costum made music interfaces that include a Wii controller baile funk beat box or a 2 x 2 meter sized MPC, João Brasil has raised heads across the planet. But most of all João is extending the boundaries of music with his amazing mash-ups. For 2010, João aims for a truly giant project: To produce and release a mashup every day. Titled “365 mashups for 2010″, you can download the daily made tracks from his newly installed “365″ blog:

http://365mashups.wordpress.com/

Here´s the first two mashups he did:

Jan 1st

4th Palco (João Brasil) by lontramusic

Jan 2nd

365 Interlude (João Brasil) by lontramusic

P.S. If you´re in Berlin on Jan 14th, make sure to come down to “Heat” @ WMF, where I´ll play with João Brasil. João will perform beforehand at Berlin´s Radialsystem in the “Baroque Series” in which electronica producers clash with a chamber orchestra. “Baroque Series” will bestaged in Hamburg on Jan 16th. More news and footage of this performance soon on these pages.

João Brasil, our man from Rio, has recently moved to London to do his MA in Design at the Interactive Media course at Middlesex University. One of his first projects is the giant, custom made MPC that he built, with which he can play Baile Funk through his feet. He used pressure pads and an Ipac board to connect them to my computer using Ableton Live. Wawatch his feet!

My Gostoso Remix EP has arrived yesterday at the Man Rec office on wax and it shines like a small sun when put on a turntable, yay! The vinyl release includes remixes by Edu K, DJ Rob 3, João Brasil, Schlachthof Bronx and Consistent. The digital release has extra remixes by Zombie Disco Squad and Sharkslayer.

Edu K delivers – as a world debut – a Minimal Techno meets Forro interpretation of “Kid Conga”- Imagine Brasil’s Northen power folk meeting up in a Berlin techno club. For the same track Chicago’s ghetto don Rob Threezy brings the big bass drums in his DJ Rob 3 remix, which will bang any Ghetto floor. Rio De Janeiro’s hot new talent João Brasil twists “Kid Conga” into a Tecno Brega track, the sizzling new sound of Brasil’s Amazon area.

ARTIST: DANIEL HAAKSMAN
TITLE: GOSTOSO REMIX
CAT. NR.: MAN 042
VINYL RELEASE DATE: SEPT 4TH 2009
DIGITAL RELEASE DATE: SEPT 11TH 2009

With names such as Zombie Disco Suqad, Edu K, Sharkslayer, DJ Rob 3, Schlachthofbronx, Consistent and João Brasil, the „Gostoso Remix“ EP brings seven hot remixes, perfect for the dancefloor.

DANIEL HAAKSMAN

Edu K delivers – as a world debut – a Minimal Techno meets Forro interpretation of “Kid Conga”- Imagine Brasil’s Northen power folk meeting up in a Berlin techno club. For the same track Chicago’s ghetto don Rob Threezy brings the big bass drums in his DJ Rob 3 remix, which will bang any Ghetto floor. Rio De Janeiro’s hot new talent João Brasil twists “Kid Conga” into a Tecno Brega track, the sizzling new sound of Brasil’s Amazon area.

Sharkslayer from Helsinki produced a block rocking remix of the anthemic “Pobum Coco”, which already set many dancefloors on fire. Zombie Disco Squad reworked “Senta Senta Mais Uma Vez” in their trademark style – in which the drugged out ecstasy of Berlin’s Panoramabar melts into the frenzy of a Rio baile funk party.

Munich’s Schlachthofbronx, who reworked “Jesus” featuring Tati Quebra Barraco and created a rough and rugged interpretation – call it Bavaria Soca Dancehall.

„Deixa Tocar“ by Berlin’s Consistent (of Frontroom Records fame). Their remix picked the original’s horns and mounted them on an irresistable, French house resembling, dancefloor filler, which already produced hands up in the air wherever played.

Seven remixes with styles that range from Disco House to Tecno Brega to Bmore Beats – the kaleidoscopic sound of Daniel Haaksman gets the appropriate poly-stylistic treatment on „Gostoso Remix“.

João Brasil X N.A.S.A

João Brasil keeps the Lambada alive with this remix he’s done for N.A.S.A’s “Whachadoin”, leaving just the vocals and chorus from the original.

NASA are DJ Zegon (José Gonzales) and Squeak E Clean, Squeak E is apparantly director Spike Jonze’s brother and Zegon is a Brazilian Hip-Hop dj who used to live in the states, worked with Money Mark amongst others and may be now living in São Paulo. He has done interesting production work for Os Racionais and Marcelo D2, the two biggest hip hop acts in Brazil and djed hip-hop extensively in Brazil but now seems to be playing gigs with artists like Mixhell and has entered mash-up culture – though his hip-hop sets always did feature a healthy selection of rap rock bootlegs.

BIG FORBIDDEN DANCE

Thursday, January 8th, 2009
big-forbidden-dance

In the second download this week we offer Brazil’s answer to Girl Talk, Joao Brasil and his latest album “Big Forbidden Dance”. Rio’s Joao Brasil is a composer and multi-instrumentalist who had a minor hit with his tune “Baranga”, which basically translates as slag/whore-like.

The title of the album”Big Forbidden Dance”, literally translates as “Baile Proibidão”, though this has nothing to do with the proibidão genre of Baile Funk. It does however, have everything to do with Girl-Talk-like mash ups, in fact it is the exact same thing, lots of small parts of familiar material, stitched together to make a very danceable whole. Differently from Girl Talk, with his tendency to mix hardcore rapping with anthemic college rock to create frat-friendly party pieces, João makes collages out of old and new dance tracks all held together with the batidão of baile funk, so you get Michael jackson rubbing shoulders with Mylo and Justice with a dash of Nirvana!.

There’s an interesting essay here dissecting Girl Talk, which is well worth the (lengthy) read, and while there’s nothing very clever or very meta in João Brasil you will find a lot of stoopid funny party bombs – enjoy!
