Electronic Siesta at the Musée du Quai Branly in Paris

While in Paris, I went yesterday to the Electronic Siesta (”Sieste electronique”) at the Museum Du Quai Branly in Paris to hear Secousse sound system. Invited to explore the vast music and field recording selection of the Musée Du Quai Branly, DJ Tron, formerly from Radioclit, presented Arabian music and Secousse MC Mo´Laudi presented various African tracks in decks-n-effex manner. Laying in the sun and enjoying the great mix of tracks I felt like being in a tropical garden on some Southern Island but not in the posh 7th arrondissement next to the Eiffel tower. If you´re in Paris this summer, make sure to visit the Museum on Sundays, it´s probably the best afternoon hangout in the city of love right now.

I was in Paris last weekend to celebrate six years of Man Recordings at Glazart alongside homeboys DJ Beware, Bambounou and Big Dope P. Next day I went to see the photo exhibition of long time Man Rec collaborator, photographer Vincent Rosenblatt. At the “Maison Europeene De La Photographie” Vince currently shows the best photos from his year long spanning work on baile funk. Shooting on baile funk parties in Rio´s favelas for more than five years, Vincent has dived deep into funk culture and has created an amazing body of work . You may know his photos from the covers of my “Who´s Afraid Of Rio?” and “Who´s Afraid Of Remix?” EPs, as well as the “Rio Baile Funk Breaks” vinyl, which are all by Vincent. If you happen to be in Paris until mid April, make sure to drop by to see the exhibition.

“Rio Baile Funk”
Until the 11/4/2011
Entry: 7€/ 4€
Maison Europeene De La Photographie (MEP)
5/7 rue de Fourcy

Vince was also on French TV5 to speak about his work and photographs:

Man Recordings Inspiration Series #10 : Paris

Tuesday, December 9th, 2008

Besides Public Enemy, Paris was one of the other great radical voices in early 90s U.S. rap. Paris became known for his song “Bush Killa”, in which he promoted fantasy lyrics of killing George Bush Sr. and racist police officers. For me though “The Devil Made Me Do It” was Paris´biggest tune. With it´s gutter drenching bassline and it´s radical lyrics the track was a slap in the face to both the romantic Native Tongues rap as well as the emerging West Coast gangster rap.
