The feedback on the remixes for Beware+Motorpitch´s “El Toro”, used in the new Hennessy Black campaign, have been hysteric. With the brand´s Soundcloud remix page download limit reaching 100 in only a few hours after the release, the online hype on the remixes by So Shifty, Bass Ill Euro, Schlachthofbronx but most of all Oliver $ have risen to the max. The limit has now been dropped, so you can go back to “Made To Mix” site and get them all. For all the fans of .WAV formats: All remixes will be officially released at the end of October on Man Recordings. Until then, check the video and sip some Hennessy!

MAN-043---KU-BO-407px

The deadline for the Ku Bo remix contest is over, we are currently evaluating the contributions. In between, we are releasing the official “KU BO REMIX” EP today, both on vinyl and in digital format.

After three critically acclaimed single releases on Man Recordings, remixes for Adam Sky (Exploited Rec), El Guincho (Mad Decent) and Schlachthofbronx, and the licenses of the tracks „Lefe“ for the „I Love Techno“ compilation by Crookers, as well as „Tsu Bo“ for the Fabric Live 49 Mix by Buraka Som Sistema, Ku Bo returns with a mind blowing remix EP. This is the new chapter for Ku Bo, the Afro tec project by Stereotyp from Vienna, Austria (of G-Stone / Crunchtime fame).

“Ku Bo Remix” presents eight remixes by classic and upcoming heat from Ku Bo. The release includes remixes by DJ Manaia, Batida, Daniel Haaksman, Flore, Robot Koch, Bert On Beats, Lazy Ants and Caski.

We give you the banging remix by Man Recordings boss Daniel Haaksman of “Sumanita” feat. Daniecell for free. With 145 BPM, it’s the fastest tempoed remix on this EP package, but nevertheless very floor friendly – imagine Dutch gabba blended with Angolan kuduro in a Cuban dancehall.

Buy the full release from today digitally at Beatport, Itunes, Junodownload etc. or on vinyl at www.manrecordings.com

Man Recordings Inspiration Series #7 : Burundi Black

African music all of a sudden seems to be everywhere. Hollertronix release an entire EP dedicated to Kuduro, Vampire Weekend get inspired by sounds from Botswana and Warp release DJ Mujava´s “Township Funk” to enthusiastic response and everyone looks to Africa as it was 1988 when “Yeke Yeke” by Mori Kanté was ruling Eurolands charts and African inspired pop music was considered the next big thing.
We @ Man Rec have been longtime fans of the kaleidoscope of sounds emerging from various African regions, be it Hi Life, Kwaito, or lately Kuduro. However one of the first African tunes to ever encounter our ears in the early 80s was Burundi Black. The track was recorded in 1967 by Sevac Ekian during a ceremony of the Ingoma Tribe in the East African State of Burundi. Back home Ekian developed the idea to arrange a “musical marriage” (mariage musical). Therefore he asked the producer Mike Steiphenson to create a fitting tune to those absorbing drum recordings and chants he brought from Burundi.

Steiphenson produced a psychedelic harmony consisting of e-guitar and piano and inserted it in Ekian’s recording. In 1971 the track was published under the pseudonym Burundi Black. “Burundi Black” was a huge success in European discotheques throughout the 1970s and is considered one of the anthems of the Cosmic Disco movement. It´s probably also one of the first remixed African tunes ever released.

On Side A of the vinyl release there is “Part 1″, the drum-solo version, on Side B (”Part 2″) the version by Steiphenson. The single went top 40 in the UK. If you´ve heard Quiet Village´s remix of Gorillaz, you may recognize the source of inspiration (oh and Beastie Boys also sampled the drums on their “Pauls Boutique” album).
